Introductory Chapter of Dissertation/Thesis

(Image from

Someone wrote in to ask how to write “an introduction”.  I replied with a design for general writing or speech. However, if that person was referring to a dissertation/thesis introduction, the following are the “ingredients” that should appear in the chapter:

*(1) Introductory paragraph

*(2) Background of the problem

*(3) Statement of the problem

*(4) Purpose of the study

*(5) Significance of the study

*(6) Primary research questions

Laurence, our member, has kindly sent in a sample Sociolinguistics dissertation. (Thank you, Laurence).
